UML removes 70-year age limit, paving the way for Oli to hold top position for yet another term

by .KATHMANDU : The CPN-UML has removed the age limit of 70 years to hold top positions within the party. A secretariat meeting of the party held at the party’s central office in Chyasal on Friday decided not to maintain the age limit of 70 years for the party’s leaders to hold top the position of the party.
This arrangement has been canceled for the time being, according to the party leaders. “It is a need-based decision. The decision has been made to keep the party more dynamic,” said a senior UML leader.
The proposal to remove the age limit of 70 years was made by Vice President Bishnu Prasad Paudel. Party insiders said Vice President Paudel raised the issue of age limit after the proposal to nominate 13 more central members was discussed in the meeting.
“Among those who have been nominated now, the age of Mukund Neupane is 70 years old. Our constitution does not allow him to be nominated as a central member,” Paudel also suggested, “Should something be done about this provision of the constitution?”
With this provision in place, Chairman KP Sharma Oli can even become the party’s Chairman for the next term as well. Several UML leaders who are otherwise set to retire from the party’s active politics will continue their active political life.
