Flood damages houses, inundates settlements in Mahottari

by .MAHOTTARI : The incessant rainfall since last Tuesday has collapsed the houses of some locals at Ramnagar in Bhangaha Rural Municipality- 4 in Mahottari district while flood led to inundation to over 150 houses in the locality.
Upendra Kapar’s house was demolished by the rain. “Thank God, the house did not claim any life when it collapsed,” he remarked.
The settlement of Chamar, Mushahar and Muslim communities were waterlogged. Aisha Khatun, a single woman in the settlement, worried, “We are poor people. Who pays heed to our voices?”
According to her, the inundation was caused due to wanton and excessive excavation of sand and aggregates in a small pond that was at the top of their settlement.
The incessant rain that continued from Tuesday has swollen Ratu River, and many settlements in the district such as Bhagawatipur, Bhalani, Leuri and Banchauri in Balawa Municipality, and Kabilasha of Bhaghaha Municipality were at risk of inundation.
Likewise, places nearby river banks and low elevations have been inundated. Dhawauli and Maliwara in Jaleshwor Rural Municipality, Anaitha, Ratawara, Ekdara Rural Municipality among others have been facing wrath of swollen Ratu River, said Chief of District Coordination Committee, Suresh Prasad Singh.
Similarly, other streams as Junga, Maraha, Kutumeshwori and Banke have been causing flood and inundation to many human settlements in the district.
