Nepal driving licence hassle : Apply today and get a chance to take tests after 5 months

KATHMANDU : Owing to the closure of the system for nine months due to the Covid-19 crisis, the Department of Transport Management says it has collected a massive pile of driving licence applications.

Further, the department has recently removed the ceiling on the number of applications.

Consequently, one needs to wait for as long as five months to take written and practical tests to obtain a licence for two- and four-wheelers, according to the department.

There are 19 transport management offices providing driving licences across the country and most of them have already got the exam schedules packed for the next five months, the officials inform. Five licence offices in the Kathmandu valley have the biggest piles of applications.

The department estimates that around 700,000 to 900,000 people are waiting for new driving licences or adding new categories onto them.

“But, our resources and people are limited,” the department’s spokesperson Lok Nath Bhusal says, “Therefore, we can conduct exams for a few people only every day.”
